Plantains

Plantains

Plantains were the electronic pop duo of Nick Hallett and Ray Sweeten, which surfaced during the Brooklyn electro scene of the early 2000s. They gained a fair amount of notoriety for their live shows (which included fake European accents and satirical video and performance art), playing with Le Tigre, Scissor Sisters and many more. In 2003, Plantains self-released a debut 12", entitled "New Wave Girl / I Listen To The Plantains", featuring remixes from Dr. Shingo and G.D. Luxxe. A demo full-length was completed around 2004, but went unreleased.

Several artists on the label were aware of Plantains, and this demo fell into the hands of I, Absentee in late 2007, just as initial preparations to launch were taking shape. Through the entire journey of the catalogue, it remained one of the few projects we always wanted to pursue. In 2010, the Plantains were reached out to and the result is a career retrospective disc, featuring the near entire 2004 album, parts of their early demo EPs and even the classic G.D. Luxxe remix from their vinyl. It's all been compiled and remastered into something of a similar resurrection from the vaults as Alpha Aesar in 2008, and certainly one equally deserving. "Career Retrospective" at long last puts Plantains into public consumption as it was meant.

Nick Hallett currently composes and curates in NYC, while Ray Sweeten does electronic, audiovisual art. Both have released a variety of music over the years, as solo acts (Nicklcat and The Mitgang Audio, respectively), as well as under their real names in assorted collaborative projects. However, their eletropop days as Plantains are left for preservation only with their collection for I, Absentee. This one's truly been long in the making...
